All boat traffic on St. Petersburg's waterways will be banned during the July summit of the Group of Eight industrialized nations, authorities have announced. Boat movement will be completely stopped during the G8 summit, Konstantin Pashinsky, the head of the State Inspection for Small Vessels, said Monday. Russia, which holds the G8 presidency during 2006, will play host to the group's annual summit. The leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States and Russia will gather in St. Petersburg's Palace of Congresses from July 15 to 17. Officials earlier had said that the summit would not disrupt normal life in St. Petersburg, which is built on hundreds of islands where the Neva River meets the Gulf of Finland. Some 500 vessels were expected to be moored near St. Petersburg during the summit, Pashinsky said. More than 30,000 small vessels are registered in the city, he said. |
