The Moscow government approved the plan of restoration of the Centralnaya Hotel. The five-star hotel is going to appear on this spot. According to the project the historical face of the building will be conserved, but the inner constructions will be demolished and the hotel area is planned to increase.
Few people know that hundred years ago the legendary Filippov’s bakery was located over there.
At the beginning of the 19th century the family of Filippov that originated from Kaluzhskaja region started cooking biscuits and pies. In 1876 there were 8 bakeries both in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. People throughout Russia knew that the best bakery is situated at the corner of Tverskaya Street and Glinischevskiy Side Street. Even the residents of Saint Petersburg palaces enjoyed rolls baked over there. It is considered that Maksim Filippov, one of the founders of the family business, was the first one who started cooking famous Russian rolls with raisins.
In 1911 his son Dmitriy Filippov opened the Lux Hotel in the left side of the building with capacity up to 550 people. Later this hotel was named the Centralnaya Hotel.
In the 30s the soviet authority stationed here international communists who were seeking refuge in the Soviet Union. The famous Russian author Mikhail Bulgakov wrote about the bakery: “The Filippov’s bakery in Tverskaya Street that is up to the ceiling full of bread, cakes, pastries, biscuits and barankas is surrounded with crowds of people standing in lines”.
Later the family business was nationalized. Nowadays there is only an unnoticeable signboard that reminds us of the famous bakery.
In the new five-star hotel the bakery is planned to be located on the ground floor along with the cafe and reception desk.
