A long-expected event took place in St Petersburg. The traffic along the Lieutenant Schmidt Bridge was inaugurated on August 15 after two years of reconstruction. The complicated renewal operation has cost almost 2,7 milliard rubles. For the period of reconstruction a temporary bridge was built for the convenience of drivers and pedestrians. The oldest and perhaps the most beautiful bridge in the city has got his historical name back together with his architectural appearance. Blagoveshchensky bridge, the first drawbridge across the Neva river, was opened in 1850, after five years it was given a new name, Nikolaevsky, and after the revolution is bore the name of Lieutenant Schmidt. It connects the center of the city with the Vasilievsky Island. Now it is on of the most modern bridges in St Petersburg and is often called one of the symbols of the city. The renovated construction is supposed to function at least one hundred years. Several hotels are located on the Vasilievsky Island - Marco Polo Saint Petersburg, Our Hotel, and Park Inn Pribaltiyskaya. St Petersburg governor Valentina Ivanovna Matvienko appeared at the inaugural ceremony. She reported that the reconstruction of another bridge in St Petersburg, Dvortsovy, would start in 2010. The project providing for a temporary bridge as with the Lieutenant Schmidt Bridge is in preparation now. Besides, the Orlovsky tunnel under the Neva River that would connect districts of the city might be built by that moment.
