The Nizhniy Novgorod governor Valeriy Shantsev has given a go-ahead to the renowned Italian trail-blazer architect Dante Oscar Benini to project a city called «Globe Town» by Nizhniy Novgorod. According to the concept, Globe Town will be an ultra-modern megalopolis corresponding in size to Manhattan, the New York downtown, with the Volga river playing the part of Hudson. A huge globe 120 metres in diameter housing a theatre, a cinema and a host of shops will be the town’s symbol, as well as 3 sky-scraper towers of 600 metres each. The population of the town is expected to aggregate about 500 000 people. The project will be embodied by the Dante O. Benini & Partners Architects studio (Italy-Britain) together with «Nizhegorodkapstroy». The total area of the land will amount to 30 mln sq.m., with 9,5 mln housing residential edifices, 3,8 mln – business objects, 2,82 mln – recreation area and administrative buildings. The height of the most buildings will be 250 metres. The project was demonstrated at the stand of the Nizhniy Novgorod region at the MIPIM-2008 real estate exhibition in Cannes. Globe Town will be located on the bank of the Volga river opposite Nizhniy Novgorod and will be connected to the old city by 4 bridges and an underground tunnel. The building itself is supposed to get started in 2010 and finished in 2020.
