This Saturday the long-expected first performance of “The Coast of Utopia” took place at the Russian Academic Youth Theater opposite the Metropol Hotel. The grandiose trilogy concerning the life of Russian intellectuals, revolutionists and writers of the century before last staged by Alexey Borodin lasts for nine hours, and so the play started at noon and continued till evening. 68 actors took part in the performance, and rehearsals have been going on for almost two years.
Tom Stoppard, an English dramatist, is the author of this piece. He has been engrossed in works of Russian philosophers for four years; he was imbued with love for Russian ideals of life and as a result his postmodernist piece was created in imitation of the literature of the 19th century. The play consists of three parts – The Voyage, The Shipwreck and The Salvage. The performance starts in Premukhino, the Bakunin’s estate, and ends in London 35 years later. Among seventy characters let’s mention the most famous Russian and foreign intellectuals Bakunin, Belinsky, Herzen, Marx, Ogarev, Stankevich, Turgenev, Chaadaev, Chernyshevsky. Stoppard showed them living, creating, going through real or mental shipwrecks and finding their peaceful haven at last. But for all that the work itself does not prove to be an anthology of ideas but just an easy and humane description of the Russian life and the mysterious Russian soul.
