Astonishing archeological finds are often discovered during construction works. In 1996 in the Chinese town of Qingzhou (Shandong province) builders hit on the hiding-place of 400 Buddhist statues from Longxing Temple. It is one of the most successful findings of the last decade, archeologists say. The sculpturess that testify the expansion of Buddhism in China in the 5th-6th centuries A.D. have been already exhibited in European and American museums. And today they can be seen in the Nikolaevsky hall of the Hermitage. They were made of grey-blue limestone with some colorful drawings and gold coating. Such rare monuments related to the Chinese history are exhibited in Saint Petersburg for the first time. The exposition is enlarged with traditional roll paintings made on silk and paper, landscapes, portraits, paintings of “flowers and birds” genre, drawn by famous Chinese artists of the 13th-17th centuries and also with rare patterns of ceramics and porcelain of the 12th-20th centuries. The exhibition is organized in the context of the Chinese Year in Russia. The Hermitage is located within 10 minutes of walking distance from the Angleterre Hotel.
