More than 400 souvenir dolls from 60 countries of the world are set out at an exhibition «A Single Doll from Every Country» that opened on August 30 at the Museum of Dolls in St Petersburg. The earliest doll is more than 60 years old, and the newest ones were created only a few months ago. There are dolls from Ukraine and Bulgaria, Finland and Poland, Germany and Great Britain, Greece and Albany, Turkey and Algeria, Mongolia and Israel and even from distant India, Ethiopia, South African Republic and Mexico at the exhibition. You can easily discover original ethnography and culture of these countries: here is a stiff English cabman; a vivid Cuban dancer and a Mexican in sombrero are nearby. Many dolls are made of multi-purpose materials – wood, plastic, papier-mache, textile, rubber, ceramics and beads. But some nations traditionally use natural materials: Norwegians use wool, and north nations prefer reindeer fur. Among exceptional specimens we can note «Galloping Gutsul» of goat cheese from the Carpathians and shaman’s Khanty-Mansi doll out of a duck’s head. A picturesque black statuette arrived from Africa, and a doll of corn leaves came from Montenegro. Dolls from Russia have a significant place at the exhibition: a national Vepsian toy, traditional handicrafts, Soviet dolls and modern souvenirs from Russian cities. The exhibition will take place till October 14. The Museum of Dolls is located on Vasilievsky Island not far from the Our Hotel and the Marco Polo Saint Petersburg Hotel.
