Within the framework of the restoration of the Catherine Palace in Saint Petersburg the facade of the palace will be covered with gold as it was in the 18-19 centuries. 2,5 billion rubles will be taken from the state budget to get this task accomplished, said Mikhail Shvydkoy, head of the Federal Agency for Culture and Cinematography. There is some evidence left that initially a number of facades were gilded, which brought about the idea of restoring their original exterior. According to Shvydkoy, gold bars for the restoration work have already been delivered to one of the banks. However, before this work starts all the necessary inspection should be carried out. Methods and terms of the restoration work were discussed last Wednesday on a meeting held in Tsarkoye Selo («Tsar’s Village»). The meeting was attended by the high-ranking officials representing cultural sphere, as well as qualified restoration experts. The plan of restoration is now in the state of development which is to be finished by the end of 2008. Above all, experts have to determine the style of which epoch they would like to follow in their work. In the course of the meeting it was also decided that the restoration work should be done at a brisk pace – although not at the expense of quality. Special attention will be paid to preserving the authentic palace fragments of the 18-19 centuries. This restoration work is being fulfilled on the threshold of the 33th anniversary of Tsarkoye Selo to be celebrated in 2010. The comprehensive restoration of the palace, including the gilding, will cost the budget about 7 billion rubles.
