The National Center of Photography in St. Petersburg presents an extraordinary exhibition. 19 Dutch authors, whose genre of works, video art, is still unfamiliar to Russian audience, by means of their «moving photos» demonstrate their point of view of the modern world. The Discovering Slowness exhibition will take place in St. Petersburg from July 20 till August 19, and in February 2008 Muscovites will be able to visit it in the Center of Contemporary Art M’ARS.
Video art is a border area between photography and cinema. People and things appear in action, but there is no story itself. Authors demonstrate interest in social and psychological aspects of life, the place that people occupy in the world, ecological questions.
Marjan Teeuwen shows how things can fill up the rooms where people and nature cannot remain. Paul Kooiker studies female bodies creating a number of series where each image has something in common with all the others and so takes on special significance. Videos of Matt Calderwoods present only plain everyday things, play of light and dark. Hans op de Beeck is a psychology master that concentrates attention on estrangement and misunderstanding between people. He gives another meaning to commonness showing, for example, three groups of table companions in his video «All together now…» A sad bride and groom with their cheerful guests, elderly people after a funeral, a slightly drunk man on a birthday party, all these characters are presented with sadness and humor at the same time. Barbara Visser creates a pseudo reality that is almost no different from the truth though.
