Ulysse Nardin is bringing to Russia 116 masterpieces of watchmaking The exhibition entitled History in Time will take place in the Armory Chamber of the Moscow Kremlin under the aegis of Ulysse Nardin watch brand. The exhibition is held to commemorate two historical events: the 200th anniversary of the Kremlin's Armory Chamber and the 160th anniversary of the Ulysse Nardin brand. Among 116 unusual timepieces that UN is bringing to Russia are the first astronomical time machine Dondi, recently acquired from the Time Museum Chicago at a sale at Sotheby's in New York; many of Ulysse Nardin's museum pieces, and more recent pieces of art, like the Westminster Tourbillon Minute Repeater Genghis Khan. The antique watch section opens with the replica of 1365 Astrarium watch made by Giovanni de Dondi in Padua. The design of the Astrarium watch was completely innovative for that time and is even now considered complicated by the watch experts. The motion of six planets of the solar system that were known by the 14th century is displayed on six extra dials. Unfortunately, the watch was soon destroyed, but the detailed description survived; in 1920s, the manuscript was translated into English, and the watch was remade by Twaites & Reed, London (the company is also famous for maintaining the Big Ben clock). Another item of the exhibition is particularly significant: Ulysse Nardin presents one of 250 wooden watches made by Bronnikov family (Vyatka town, between the Volga and the Urals). All components of this watch, except springs, are made of various sorts of wood: for instance, the watch has birch body and lint cranks. The reason for that was not the lack of metal in Vyatka at those times - Bronnikov's watches are remarkable examples of the craftsmen's engineer pride. Within the exhibition there are also numerous timepieces by Ulysse Nardin, from their first navy chronometers (that gained numerous awards for over a century) to the specimens of fine watchmaking art that were produced during the recent years. Among the items of the latter category are several collectible watches made after the WWII (from private collections), and some outstanding timepieces designed by Dr. Ludwig Oechslin. The 'Trilogy' of the astronomical watches was produced in 1985. The trilogy represents the whole solar system comprised in a wristwatch and has entered the Guinness Book of Records. The famous Westminster repeater tourbillion 'The Genghis Khan' will also be shown at the exhibition, along with other innovative timepieces recently made by Ulysse Nardin. |
