Today Saint Petersburg hosted the opening of the Museum of the History of Brewing – the first repository of the traditions and mysteries of this ancient and honourable craft in Russia. The museum is located on the territory of the Stepan Razin Brewery built in the 19th century and is a unique collection of exhibits, many of them having no analogues in Russia. According to the project’s creators, they are striving to arrive at some of the educational and enlightenment goals such as destructing the myths connected with beer and raising the level of the culture of beer consumption. The museum will tell the guests the history of the drink rooted in great antiquity, along with the traditions and customs surrounding it. Special place in the museum is dedicated to the industrial brewing which was born in the epoch of Empress Catherine II. Under her patronage the first Russian brewery was built destined to become famous throughout Russia. It is from this time on that the oldest Stepan Razin Brewery has been known in the country. The exposition of the museum disposes over 600 specimens including a model copy of the Ancient Egypt brewery created by the Hermitage restorers, ancient Russian ethnographical beer making objects and utensils, documents, copies of the ukases by Peter the Great, fragments of old beer bottles, earthenware crockery, photographs, awards and so on. However, it will not be possible to taste the product itself in the museum. It the initial stage the museum will be open on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 till 17, the entry being gratis.
