Yesterday the Small Hall of the Saint Petersburg Conservatoire hosted the opening of the third «Bethlehem Star» Christmas International Music Festival which will present Christmas music of different centuries – from the Middle Ages to our days. The honorary right to perform at the inauguration this year was given to the prize-winner of international contests «Lege Artis» chamber choir conducted by Boris Abelyan, which performed Old Russian and Western European Christmas music. On the subsequent days of the festival the listeners will have the opportunity to make a musical journey to such Christian countries as Serbia, Greece, Georgia and Italy. Special emphasis in the program is put on revealing the opulent heritage of the Old Russian music, from ancient liturgical motets to the music of Christmastide romps, round dances, divination and Christmas carols. And the festival certainly will not dispense with Christmas presents - this time it will be the performance of the Musica Petropolitana ensemble which will play the sonatas of Heinrich Ignaz von Biber, as well as the concert of the horn orchestra favoured by the Russian nobility of 18-19 centuries, featuring the Mariinsky Theatre opera star Olga Kondina. The festival will also be attended by some foreign guests – the «Branko» motet community from Serbia. The festival was founded for enlightenment and charity purposes by the Saint Petersburg Conservatoire together with the Museum of Music in Sheremetevsky Palace (not far from the famous hotels «Astoria» and «Angleterre»). The start of the festival is accompanied by the exhibition of old Russian motet manuscripts from the collections of the manuscript department of the Conservatoire. The festival will last up to January 18.
