On August 22 the National Flag Day is celebrated in Russia. This year the holyday falls on a workday, nevertheless various solemn festivities timed to this date will take place in Russian towns and cities. The largest banner in history will be unfurled in Moscow near the Olympic rowing canal in Krylatskoe. Official establishment, Unified Russia party members and famous sportsmen Vladislav Tretyak and Irina Rodnina will assist at the ceremony. In Saint Petersburg a festive salvo will be fired at noon from the Naryshkin bastion. The Stony Island Hotel, the Andersen Hotel and the Guyot Hotel are located in close proximity to the Peter and Paul fortress. As the law prescribes it, the official national symbol of Russia represents a rectangular sheet composed of three horizontal stripes equal in width; the proportion of sides must be two to three. The upper stripe of the flag is white, the middle one is blue and the lower one is red. It is considered that the while color symbolizes purity, the blue color symbolizes faith and the red color is the symbol of blood shed for the fatherland. The three colors standard replaced the Soviet red flag with sickle and hammer. The white, red and blue banner was first raised on the Russian warship Eagle in 1667. Peter the Great is reputed as its father because he enacted to raise such standards on every Russian merchant ship. On August 22, 1991 the three colors flag became an official symbol of Russia, and the holiday in honor of it was established in 1994.
