The Russian Black Sea city of Sochi stages on Sunday “the Resort Olympiad”, the first mass sports holiday, uniting both prof sportsmen and sport amateurs. The city will turn into a huge stadium where around 3,000 people will test their force in speed and prowess. “Since the time Sochi tendered an application for Winter Olympics in 2014, we are constantly looking for new forms of mass participation of Sochi residents and guests of the city in sport competitions so that they should be interesting and accessible for holiday-makers and citizens,” Sochi Mayor Viktor Kolodyazhny stressed in an interview with Itar-Tass on Sunday. The Sochi competitions will beat all records in their participation. Competitions will be held in more than 20 events. For this purpose, 15 makeshift sport installations have been built in the city center, including well-equipped courts for skateboarding, arm-wrestling, table tennis and checkers. Every resident of the city and its guest, irrespective of their age or sport achievements, will have only to make an application on their participation. Organizers plan live TV and radio broadcastings from various events of “the Resort Olympiad”. All municipal mass media and Itar-Tass render informational assistance in preparations and progress of competitions. The awarding of all-out winners and runner-ups of the games will be held right after the end of the Olympiad. For this purpose, a stage for ceremonies was erected in the square near the Fine Arts Museum. The winners will be honored by Mayor Kolodyazhny, 2006 Olympic champion in skating Svetlana Zhurova and silver prize-winner in bobsleigh at the 2006 Olympics Alexei Voevoda. The first “Resort Olympiad” was co-sponsored by the Russian Federal Agency for Physical Culture and Sport, the Sochi administration and city council as well as the application committee Sochi-2014. The Games will be also held under the aegis of the All-Russian mass competitions organization Sportivnaya Rossiya. |
