The first week of March all Russian cities and towns will see off winter – the traditional Pancake week festival (Maslenitsa) will take place. In Moscow more than 200 events will be timed to this heathen holiday.
The 7th city festival “Broad Pancake Week” will come about in all districts of the capital, and by tradition Vasilievsky Spusk will be the central site of the celebrations. From February 27 a true fair will spread out there – rows of stalls with authentic Russian souvenirs, pavilions “Mead – Sbiten”, “Pancake House”, “Tea-House”, “Coffee House”, cheerful side-shows, a stage in the form of the sun.
Picturesque festive events will be also held in the Izmailovo Kremlin, in the territory of the All-Russian Exhibition center, in Sokolniki Park, in Kolomenskoe, in Tsaritsyno, in Gorky Culture and Leisure Park. There will be public open-air merry-makings and funs (walking on stilts, comic fighting), performances of folklore ensembles and mountebanks, horse riding, fairs, pancake records, traditional ceremonies (for example, incineration of Maslenitsa). Guests from abroad who want to join to real Russian revels are welcome here.
Essential part of the holiday is pancakes and other dishes of Russian cuisine. Guests of Moscow may taste them in the restaurant of their hotel, because every chef prepares exclusive recipes for the festival, or enjoy piping hot battercakes outdoors.
