Russia has acquired the right to host the winter Olympic games in 2014. Sochi, a resort city, received most of votes of International Olympic Committee. The Russian city left South Korean city of Pyeongchang behind in the second round at advantage of four votes. Austrian city of Saltsburg, the third candidate, was eliminated in the first round of a vote. Russia has staged the Olympic games only once before, in 1980 in Moscow. That was one of the most outstanding events of the century. The personal participation of the Russian president in the presentation of Sochi Olympic request has played an important role. Vladimir Putin was informed about the victory in the airplane on his back way from Guatemala to Moscow. He congratulated the Russian delegation by telephone, and also he telephoned to the IOC president Jacque Rogge and thanked the committee members for their impartial decision. The Russian president said that the preparation for the Olympic games in Sochi would be carried in close collaboration with the IOC.
