Russia marked on Sunday Day of Baikal, the deepest and largest fresh water lake in the world. The holiday has been timed to coincide this year with the decade of granting the lake the status of UNESCO world heritage. Baikal, located in the form of a crescent in the country’s southeast, contains 20 percent of world reserves of the purest drinking water – 23,600 cubic meters. Its surface area is 31,500 square kilometers: its territory can freely house such European states as Denmark and Belgium. The lake’s depth is 1,637 meters. A senior researcher of the Oceanology Institute Lev Merklin told that the lake is 7.5-8 million years old. “Baikal is a peer of the Himalayas. As the mountains, the lake was formed by the clash of the Indian and Asian tectonic structures,” he explained. Baikal is famous for its water all over the world. The specialist noted that it is “the most tasty and ideal for its content, that is the balance of micro-organisms and mineral substances”. The lake is also famous for its endemism: well-known Baikal omul, Baikal whitefish and sturgeon. Besides, tourists can meet there a typically sea mammal – Baikal seal. “It is likely to get into the lake from the Arctic along the Yenisey and Angara rivers,” Merklin suggested. The Ministry of Natural Resources reported that the Russian Water Resources Agency appropriated over 135 million roubles in 2006 to protect and guard Baikal in the territories of the Irkutsk Region and the Buryatia Republic. “Shore-protection installations will be built by the year-end to bar industrial and household waste from getting into the lake. The problem of preserving the unique ecological system of Lake Baikal will be examined in Ulan-Bator on August 28-29 at a meeting of plenipotentiary representatives of the Russian and Mongolian governments on implementing the intergovernmental agreement on protection and use of trans-border waters. |
