A unique museum of glass will be opened by the end of 2008 in the Greenhouse building of the Elaginoostrovsky palace in St Petersburg. Reconstruction works of the building are close to the end now. Visitors will be able to see equipment for glass processing, familiarize themselves with Russian traditions of its production in the halls of the palace. The exposition “Garden of Glass” presents displays from the collection of the Elaginoostrovsky palace. It is based on the set of more than seven thousand articles from the Leningrad Decorative Glass Works, which were passed to the museum in 2000. It is significant that glass-processing technologies, which have been used throughout the former Soviet Union, were elaborated exactly on this works. In 2009 tourists will be able to visit the temporary expositions hall, the conference hall and the exhibition devoted to use of glassware in human activities too. Among the exhibit there will be scent-bottles, plates and dishes, electric bulbs, complicated technical elements. The Elaginoostrovsky palace was created in 1818 upon the project of Karl Rossi. It was one of the favorite residences of the imperial family. The palace contained a unique collection of Russian decorative and applied art. After the revolution of 1917 Elagin Island passed into the ownership of the state and is under its particular guard now. It can be easily reached from the Eurasia Regina Hotel and the Guyot Hotel.
