An exhibition «Men and the time» of Sergey Borisov, a classical Russian photographer, opened at the «Manezh» central exhibition hall on August 4. More than 200 black-and-white works that however present only a little part of his rich artistic heritage are selected to show how people, sentiments and interests have been changing during the last 25 years. As the author notes, there is surprisingly much remaining from the Soviet Union epoch in contemporary Russia, that is particularly evident in photos made in the provinces. Sergey Borisov is an outstanding figure of the Perestroika culture, many of his works we can call epoch-making. He often photographs his characters against a background of Soviet monuments or cult Soviet buildings. Some photos of Sergey Borisov became emblems of the Perestoika beginning, for example «Flight» where a young man jumps up at a Krymsky bridge parapet. Sergey Borisov took many photos of celebrities. The exhibition audience can see Zhanna Aguzarova, Mikhail Boyarsky, Boris Grebenshikov as they looked like many years ago, without bombast and seal of fame. But perhaps the most interesting object to see is Russia itself in Perestroika epoch in comparison with Russia today. The artist’s view of life is in full harmony with the spirit of the 1980’es: informal, inclined to protest, free, slightly nostalgic. Those who stay at Le Royal Meridien National Hotel can easily visit this exhibition.
