This year the 195th anniversary of the historical battle of Napoleon’s army and Kutuzov’s forces will be celebrated near the village of Borodino in the Moscow region. The main event of the Patriotic War of 1812 took place on September 7 (August 26 in Old Style). Early in the morning 250 thousand French and Russian soldiers met on the battlefield. Historians still dispute about the battle’s result, but there is no doubt that is went down in history of both countries.
This Sunday on September 2 a traditional war and history festival «Borodino’s Day» will take place at the scene of the battle. The first celebration of the kind took place in 1839, in 1995 the festival took on international significance and since then it takes place every year. Ceremonials at command posts of Kutuzov and of Napoleon in the villages of Gorky and Shevardino, and then at the Main Monument on the Rayevsky battery site will open it.
Reconstruction of the Grand Battle of Borodino will represent the festival’s culmination. 2000 soldiers, 200 horses and 30 artillery mounts will participate in it. Impressive battle scenes with many special effects will be performed at the area of 50 thousand square meters to the west of the village of Borodino. Mikhail Kutuzov and Napoleon Bonaparte will appear at the battlefield for the first time in the festival’s history. More than 100 thousand visitors from Russia and from abroad are expected at the celebration. You can arrive at the Borodino Museum and Reserve by electric train from Belorussky railway station. The Sheraton Palace Hotel, the Holiday Inn Lesnaya Hotel and the Marriott Tverskaya Hotel are located near the railway station.
