On September 26 the first playing card museum in Russia opened in the Peterhof state museum and reserve. Its collection numbers about 30 thousand articles, more than 6 thousand packs of cards. A separate building of the 18th-19th centuries was allotted for the exposition that was earlier a part of Cavalier Houses of the palace government of Peterhof. It was restored this summer. A collection of Alexander Perelman formed the basis of the museum exposition. This famous collector had been gathering cards all over the world during more than 30 years and planned to open a similar museum himself. After his death the administration of Peterhof redeemed the collection from his widow and during the last years the experts have been enriching the collection at auctions and thanks to private donations. Now it embraces playing cards from the 16th-20th centuries created by Russian, European, Asiatic and American artists, fortune-telling (including tarot), historical, educational, political, advertising, geographical, children’s and other different cards. The collection also includes rare counters and chips, small boxes and cases for chalks, and decorative handicrafts with cards symbols and attributes, graphics and porcelain ware as well. Several subject halls are opened at the museum – Oriental and West-European, a hall of fortune-telling cards and an introductory hall where you can learn about the history of cards’ origin that already amounts to one and a half thousand years. If you stay at the Baltic Star Hotel, you will be able to see this unique exposition yourself.
