On Friday December 7 the State Hermitage celebrated its 155th birthday. It is commemorated on the feast of St Catherine the Great Martyr, the divine patroness of Catherine the Great who founded the Winter Palace. The latter on December 7, 2008 became the residence of the first public fine arts museum in Russia. Opening of two permanent expositions was timed to the present anniversary – the one concerning history and culture of the Golden Horde and the other about the life of Adygei and Alan tribes in the Early Middle Ages under the name “Relics Gully – a monument on the Northern Caucasia silk way” presenting ancient silk, clothes of fabric, leather, fur, wood objects that kept safe in sand by a miracle. There are no more displays of the kind in the whole world. Besides parquet floors in the Alexandrovsky hall with complicated geometric pattern were restored this year and Bosporus halls were newly painted horizontal strips that resemble Pompeii frescos. Journalists were the first ones to see the results of restorers’ work. A new artwork is exhibited in the Apollo hall – “Madonna delle Grazie” by Lorenzo Lotto, a Venice painter of the 16th century. Let us also add that next year an exhibition of the Islam art between China and Europe will open in the Hermitage. Another possible innovation in the museum is change of its green fronts into pearly ones that was intended by the director of the Hermitage Mikhail Piotrovsky.
