The 10th International Earlymusic Festival opened in St Petersburg last Sunday. Musicians from the whole world who perform classical music in the original way came to the northern capital. A rare violin from the beginning of the 18th century, a French violoncello in empire style, a harpsichord and other curiosities in hands of musicians sound as they used to do many centuries ago, although their genuine voice can only be judged from ancient treatises. Authentic sounding of the whole composition depends in many respects on the ancient instrument; therefore its selection must be made with great care. Only one group, «Soloists of Catherine the Great», represents St Petersburg and all Russia. Among foreign guests we can mark out such outstanding musicians as Gustav Leonhardt, Paolo Pandolfo, Michael Chance, and also Les Basses Reunes, Il Giardino Armonico, Microlugus, Organum, Musica Antiqua Roma and Alla Francesca groups. Their repertoire ranges from masterpieces of classicism, baroque and renaissance to sacred music of the Early Middle Ages. In addition to concerts audience can attend lectures on the history of music. An original staging of the opera «Boris Godunov» composed in 1710 by Johann Mattheson, the great friend and teacher of Handel, will be the most significant event during the festival. Besides St Petersburg three other Russian cities, Moscow, Yekaterinburg and Perm, will host the festival. Hotels of these cities wait impatiently for you.
