On Friday, August 17, 2007 large-scale archaeological dig was completed on the territory of the Moscow Kremlin not far from the Moskvoretskaya tower. The research area in the southeast part of the Tainitsky Garden amounted to more than 800 square meters. In the course of the excavations the archaeologists dug out more than a hundred ancient buildings, including houses, pavements, palisades, household constructions, shoemaker’s and jeweler’s shops and a fisherman’s house; also they found several thousands objects dated back to the 14th-16th centuries. Among the objects been found we can note an absolutely unique birch bark document from the 14th century written with ink. Tatyana Panova, the head of the archaeological department of the Kremlin Museums, mentioned that the most striking thing about this find was that the ink inscription had remained intact in spite of the fact that the document had been underground for more than 600 years. On all the other documents dated from this period being at the disposal of scientist the letters were scratched. This document presents an inventory of property of a prosperous townsman about 50 lines long. Now the document is put into a special container to preserve it from the sunshine and other external actions. Amid other finds there are rare cast glass icons from the 15th century, a shestoper (a kind of a mace), leather cases for household utensils, gold jewels and weapons. The most preserved constructions will be stored in Kolomenskoe museum and reserve; other finds are to be exhibited in Kremlin museums. The Baltschug Kempinski hotel is located opposite the Moscow Kremlin and has a beautiful view of its buildings.
