The Metrocom, a universal telecom operator, in collaboration with the directorate of the Pulkovo St Petersburg Airport set the first wireless Internet access points in the territory of Pulkovo-2. At present hot spots connected to fiber-optic network operate in the VIP lounge and two business lounges of the airport. Access to the Internet is available for several tens of users at one time and is free of charge. Any visitor with a laptop, a smartphone or a pocket PC on himself may be connected to the network if he enters personal data indicated on the Internet access cards, which are distributed by the business lounge staff. Transfer rate will amount to 54 megabit per second that is comparable with a high-speed landline line.
In future similar hot spots will appear in the VIP and business lounges of Pulkovo-1 and also in the waiting rooms of both airports but in the latter case the Internet access will require payment. Metrocom access cards will be presumably on sale in special stands in the airport territory.
Wi-Fi network connection in Saint Petersburg airports is suspected to be in great demand among passengers, particularly among business travelers who need to have access to their corporate mail and to the Internet during the whole trip – in hotels, cafes, waiting rooms, business centers. Now there are already two Wi-Fi networks in Pulkovo Airport that belong to the VimpelCom and the Peterstar companies.
