St Petersburg will be the only city in Russia through which the Olympic Fire will be carried in 2008. Representatives of the steering committee of the Summer Olympic Games in Peking that will take place from August 8 till 24 have signed a corresponding agreement with the city’s administration. The governor of St Petersburg Valentina Matvienko said that it was a very good sign for the city, which was also going to claim to host Summer Olympic Games. The Olympic flame will be kindled in Olympya in Greece in March 2008. It will surmount 137 thousand kilometers; it will pass through five continents and 22 cities. The race’s idea consists in repeating partly the itinerary of the Silk Route. Among European cities Paris, London and St Petersburg will be the only ones to be given this honor. The flame will arrive in St Petersburg on April 5 from Istanbul. The total length of the relay race through the city on the Neva River will amount to about 20 kilometers, 80 sportsmen will carry the torch for a distance of 250 meters each. The race will start in the Victory Park at 14 pm, then it will pass through the most famous sights of the city – Saint Isaac’s Square, the Bronze Horseman – and will finish at Dvortsovaya square where a grand celebration will take place. Stay at the Astoria Hotel and take a chance to participate in a welcome to the Olympic Fire.
