The realization of the roofs greenery planting program has started in Moscow. The first building to run the experiment is the skyscraper at Novy Arbat, 11. There is already a lawn with paths and an automatic hydro system. The works are to be completed by the end of August. The planting of greenery on roofs can improve the environment, create extra space for rest, decorate the city, and hide ugly constructions. But the project is not cheap. Transformation of a roof of one building into a lawn will cost the city budget about 25 million rubles. According to the chief of the press-cutting service of the Central administrative district of Moscow, Ekaterina Zolotareva, the project is still at the stage of experiment. It’s necessary to see if the green will take root and if all that will not cause damage to the building exploitation. In the course of year the specialists will observe the plants and the technical condition of the roof. If the experiment is a success, green plantations will appear on neighboring buildings. The planting of greenery on roofs is not a Russian know-how. Moscow officials adopted the European experience. In Holland and in Germany lawns and flowerbeds have grown on roofs for a long time. An important difference is that in Europe they choose low buildings for planting and the gardens are available to everyone’s view. On the contrary in Moscow the officials decided to underline the ecological constituent of the project.
