Last Sunday on August 26 Muscovites celebrated a birthday of a famous Russian souvenir matreshka. The celebration was hold in the context of the 4th International Festival of Amateur and Folk Arts called the Fair of Handicraft in the Russian Courtyard center of handicrafts. This fair will take place from August 25 till September 2 in the Kremlin in Izmailovo in the east of the capital, not far from the Izmailovo hotel complex. The organizers of the event prepared an interesting program for children and adults: competitions, painting master-classes, and exposition of handicrafts. Children attempted to decorate matreshkas by hand, and their parents admired works of folk arts, walked along the Gourmandizing Row or took part in creation of masterpieces as well. Five hundred matreshkas were placed at the disposal of visitors, and each of them has got its own unique face in people’s hands. Decoration of a matreshka two meters high was the festival’s culmination. It took several hours. Matreshka is the most well-known Russian souvenir beloved in the whole world. It is taken for an essential symbol of Russia. The technology of its manufacture descends from remote ages. Skills of present-day craftsmen that turn and decorate wooden matreshkas have attained perfection.
