In January 2009 the main building of the Bolshoy Theater will be opened after long reconstruction that started in July 2005. The first performance on the main stage will be the opera of Mikhail Glinka “Ruslan and Ludmila”. The opening night will take place on October 1, 2009. Alexander Vedernikov, the chief conductor and music director of the Bolshoy Theater, and Dmitry Chernyakov, a well-known Russian director, will participate in this production.
The first foreign theater, which will act on the reconstructed stage, will be La Scala from Milan. According to Mikhail Shvydkoy, the head of the Russian Federal Agency for Culture and Cinematography, the tour of La Scala is planned for October 18-19, 2009. And the troupe of the Bolshoy Theater will visit Italia on January 7-9, 2008 for its turn. The chorus and the orchestra will present compositions of Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and Prokofiev.
At present restoration works in the theater are in full swing. Production and store facilities that will keep famous scenery of the Bolshoy are under reconstruction now. Mikhail Shvydkoy expects that the theater will be opened in 2009 if works go on at the actual rate.
Guests of the Metropol Hotel can reach the Bolshoy Theater if they cross Teatralny Street and pass along Teatralnaya Square decorated with beautiful fountains.
