The traditional competition of Fathers Frost will open today in the ancient capital of Karelia – Olonets. 14 Fathers from Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Karelia and Leningradskaya region will participate in it. The chief Father Frost of Russia also arrived here to open a morning performance for disabled children and other children’s events. Kids form the neighborhood could hand the New Year’s guest their letters and communicate with the grandfather in person.
The inauguration of the 8th Olonets Games will take place this evening at 19:30 pm on the central square of the city after the procession of Fathers Frost through streets of Olonets. The guest from Veliky Ustyug and his Karelian colleague Morozets Pakkaine will light the New Year’s Flame, and then an enchanting musical show for tourists who came here from every corner of the country and were accommodated at one of the city hotels will start. In the evening all Fathers Frost will gather for a “frosty bath” where they will be able to make acquaintance and discuss.
The Games will include several contests – valenki throwing at a target, “frosty and not in the least serious football” between Fathers Frost and Snow Maidens, skiing and hockey. The delegation of Fathers Frost will also visit the local maternity hospital and felicitate one of newborn boys. It will be a tribute to the legend saying that Pakkaine, the symbol of the games, was born on the first day of winter. On December 9 at the ceremonial closure of the Games one of the participants will be given the honorary title of the winner – the most adroit, ready-witted and cheery Father Frost of the Year.
