On July 23, an exposition called «The New World. Three centuries of American art» opened in the Pushkin State Art Museum. The United States ambassador William Burns, the Solomon Guggenheim Art Foundation director Thomas Krens, actors Jeremy Irons and Dennis Hopper participated in the grand opening. The exhibition is staged in answer to the «RUSSIA!» Project presented in the Guggenheim museums in New York in 2005 and 2006. At first the exposition was in China, it will be open in Moscow from July 24 till September 9, and then it will leave for Bilbao, Spain. The Moscow exhibition is timed to a bicentenary of the United States and Russia diplomatic relations establishment.
The Pushkin Museum director Irina Antonova called this project a didactic exposition, because it presents about a hundred works created in different periods of the USA history, from colonization up to the present. Among them we can note famous portraits of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart, landscapes by George Innes and Albert Bierstadt, impressionistic works of Ernest Lawson and John Sargent, two works of a post-impressionist artist Maurice Prendergast, and also the works of the greatest American artists: Robert Henry, George Catlin, John Singleton Copley, Charles Willson Peale and Frederic Edwin Church.
The abstract expressionism and the pop art that prevailed in the 1950’s and 1960’s are most entirely showed at the exposition: Willem de Kooning, Roy Lichtenstein, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Andy Warhol are the presented artists. Among young artist we can note Jeff Koons, Jean-Michel Baskia, Kehinde Wiley and Dana Schutz. You can see all these paintings if you stay at one of the nearest hotels, for example, the Arbat Hotel.
