The Alexandrovsky (former New Tsarskoselsky) Palace, located in the Alexandrovsky park of Tsarskoye selo (Tsar’s Village), was being built from 1792 till 1796 according to the order of Empress Katherine II specially for the wedding of her favourite grandson, Great Prince Alexander (in future Emperor Alexander I) with Great Princess Elisabeth. The architectural project belonged to the famous Italian architect Giacomo Quarenghi, whereas the interiors were appointed by a host of Russian and foreign craftsmen. In contrast to Alexander I who preferred the Great Tsarskoselsky Palace during his stay in Tsarskoye selo, his successor Nicholas I favoured the Alexandrovsky Palace and paid special attention to its accomplishment. Subsequently, the palace was the residence of the grandson of Nicholas I – Great Prince Alexander (future Alexander III), then in 1904 it became the permanent abode of Emperor Nicholas II. The last 13 years of his rule were spent here until the day in 1917 when the royal family was exiled to Tobolsk. In the XX century an unusual and intricate destiny befell the Alexandrovsky Palace – in different periods it was a state museum, the rest home of the People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs, German headquarters, the place where the collections of the Institute of Russian Literature were kept, a representative office of the naval authorities. From 1997 on the exposition called «Reminiscences in the Tsarskoye selo» prepared by the Tsarskoye selo museum-preserve from the museum collections has been working here.
