The St Michael’s (Engineers) Castle is the favourite brainchild of the Russian emperor Paul I, an outstanding architectural monument of the end of the 18th century. The castle was built under the indefatigable direction of the emperor, was ceremonially blessed in 1800 in honor of St Michael the Archangel and became the parade residence of Paul and the place of his death. In the 19th century the castle housed the Central Nikolaevsky College of Engineering, from this the second name of the castle comes.
The exterior of the building bears precise traces of Paul’s personality. The majestic and original construction blends together elements of different styles, but the most important one is romantic classicism. Bazhenov and Brenna. All four facades of the building differ, and contemporaries used to get amazed at the suite of rich and magnificent chambers.
Nowadays the St Michael’s Castle is a part of the State Russian Museum complex. There are two permanent expositions – “Antique Subjects in Russian Art” (works of the 18th century) and “The Epoch Of Renaissance In The Oeuvre Of Russian Artists” (18th – the first half of the 19th century). Visitors may also see the interiors of the castle – the sumptuous Raphael Gallery and the famous Hall of Antiques.
