The town of Gatchina is situated 45 kilometers to the South-West off Saint Petersburg, with the history numbering more than 5 centuries. In the times of Peter the Great Gatchina turned into a suburb of the new Russian capital – Saint Petersburg. A country estate was built here for the Tsar, who later on gave it as a present to his beloved sister Natalya. From 1765 the country house belonged to Grigoriy Orlov, the almighty minion of Catherine II. A magnificent palace and an English-style park were erected here for the new possessor. This ensemble, projected by the architect Antonio Rinaldi, became a true masterpiece of landscape art and won international recognition. In 1783 Gatchina became the residence of Great Prince Paul, heir to the Russian throne, who rebuilt some parts of the palace according to his taste. In 1796 Paul came to the throne and granted Gatchina the status of a town and a personal emblem. Gatchina became a true centre of the social life under Emperor Alexander III, who preferred Gatchina to all the other residences and spent most time of the year here. In the XIX century Gatchina was one of the favourite suburbia of the Saint Petersburg residents; such renowned writers and artists as A.Kuprin, I.Bunin and F.Shalyapin were frequent guests to the town.
