One of the most sublime cathedrals of Saint Petersburg - the Kazan Cathedral – was erected in the shortest possible time (from 1801 to 1811) in compliance with the order of Emperor Paul I. The outstanding architect A.N.Voronikhin was the author of the project. The cathedral was specially built for the «miraculous» icon of the Kazan Blessed Virgin – one of the main relics of Saint Petersburg and the patron of the House of Romanovs. It was conceived as the principal cathedral of the capital. Encompassed in the high classical style, the Kazan Cathedral resembles St Peter’s Cathedral in Rome, which is corroborated by the single dome (not typical of Orthodox churches of the Moscow period) and the external colonnade. The construction of the Cathedral was a crucial cultural milestone marking the beginning of the golden period in the Russian architecture and served as a model for a great many subsequent architectural masterpieces.
