Sightseeing time: 3 h. The walls of the 15th century Spaso-Andronicov monastery show traces of frescos from the hand of Andrey Rublev, buried at the site, and his friend, Daniel Tcherny. In the grounds of the monastery there are many burial places of great figures of Russian culture and art, and monuments surviving from days of communist purges. During years of repression, children of families deemed opponents of the system were kept in the monastery under orders. Now, Andrei Rublev’s Museum of Icons is located there. The museum houses a unique collection of ancient icons from all over Russia and depicts the process of their creation, including the technology used in preparing boards and paints.
