Sightseeing time: 8 h. Gzhel is the name of one of the major ceramics centres of Russia. Down the years, the potters of Gzhel have maintained their unique traditional style. From one generation to another, they’ve handed down their skills. During your visit to Gzhel, you will see the secrets of porcelain and majolica production. In the shops of the Handicrafts Amalgamation you’ll see the process at work. You’ll see the specifics of the traditional design. You’ll have the chance to create a souvenir for your friends back home, viewing in the workshops how the artist`s idea, the original sketch, turns into highly-artistic works of art. Young craftspeople, too. In Gzhel, children’s education starts at kindergarten, where boys and girls make their first attempts to express their fantasies by the use of clay. Their exposure to the craft continues in school workshops and at Gzhel Industrial Art College. Here, students study not only composition and painting but also the masters` secrets of technological processes. Advanced instruction takes them further at the High Art School. In the museum`s halls are faithfully preserved documents and exhibits. You’ll meet the artists and designers, seeing examples of their style peculiarities. You will see the peculiarities of their individual styles. For it is nature that gives the creators their ideas for vessels or caskets, decorated by the figurines of people and animals, or fantastic architecture. On your visit, you’ll see impressions of luxuriant flower-bunches a’bloom, scenes of real life and folk coming to life in titled sculpture - brushes of the painters turning simple household items into works of art. The secret of Gzhel art is in its pronounced originality, its basis in nature.
