The city occupies an area of 490 square km.The current population is about 1.5 million people.
The demand for iron and steel armaments made Peter the Great to send people to the Urals to establish new factories and plants. From 1721 a new factory and a town building started on the Iset river. The new plant-fortress was given the name Ekaterinburg after Ekaterina, Peter the Great`s wife. The city grew rapidly and soon became the center of the Urals and Siberia. In early nineteenth century the gold-rush came to the Urals. Gold, platinum, diamonds and emeralds had been found in the territory. In 1924 the city was renamed into Sverdlovsk and became a center of Soviet military production. Soon after the Second World War Sverdlovsk became a closed city for foreigners. And only in 1992 the city regained its original name and became opened for all visitors.
Quite popular are the museums of Ekaterinburg: the Fine Arts and Antural Studies Museums, the Museums of Architecture and Industrial Mahcinery, the Geological, Stone Cutting Art and Jewelry Museums and others. You can spend an evening in one of the theaters such as the State Academic Opera and Ballet theater, Musical Comedy theater or Drama theater. The places to see include the 18th century Mining Chancellery. Ekaterinburg lives an active political life. More than 20 political parities and movements are registered here. Ekaterinburg draws geologists and curious tourists who come to see the Commusnist-era history and find a city surprisingly rich in pre-Soviet churches and other architecture of an earlier era. |
